The Hidden Connection Between Excess Weight and Chronic Joint Pain

The Hidden Connection Between Excess Weight and Chronic Joint Pain

If you live with chronic joint pain, you might feel like every step is a struggle. At Maryland Medical First P.A. in Parkville, Maryland, Dr. Narender Bharaj and our team provide comprehensive primary care to address the root causes of your pain.

Many people know that carrying extra weight puts physical pressure on their knees and hips. However, there is a deeper, chemical connection between excess weight and joint pain. Understanding this link is the first step toward finding lasting relief from arthritis and joint stiffness.

How does excess weight cause joint pain?

Body fat is metabolically active and is linked with low-grade inflammation throughout the body. Researchers are studying how this inflammatory activity may contribute to osteoarthritis pain, including in joints that do not bear much body weight.

In a study in Arthritis & Rheumatology of 281 adults with hand osteoarthritis, higher body mass index was associated with more severe hand pain. Because the study involved hand osteoarthritis, the findings suggest that the relationship between body weight and joint pain may involve more than mechanical pressure alone.

At Maryland Medical First P.A., we look at the whole picture of your health. We help you understand how systemic inflammation affects your joints.

How much weight do you need to lose for relief?

You do not need to reach a perfect weight to feel better. Even a modest weight reduction can significantly ease joint discomfort.

A 2025 study in Medical Science Monitor followed 89 adults with obesity and knee pain for five years. Pain and function improved over time, and a BMI reduction of more than 13.3% was associated with a lower likelihood of progression of knee joint degeneration.
